One of the # 1 Biker Painters in the Country, "A True Master"
Carl
C. Cain was born and raised in southern Illinois and for 16 years
he has lived in Elizabethtown, ILL near Cave-In-Rock, ILL where they now hold
the Hog Rock Motor cycle event.
Having older brothers who were car nuts, Carl soon
became one himself. In1966 Carl attended the very 1st Street Rod Nationals
in Peoria, ILL in 1970. There he saw the 23-T that belonged to Andy Brizio
that had just won America's Most Beautiful Roadster award in California. It
had been painted by one of the top custom painters in California by the name
of Art Himsl who today, 34 years later, is still one of the top custom painters
in the US.
Carl
stood back and studied that paint job for about 2 hours until Andy started
to get nervous. "I believe he was worried I was going to do something
to it" said Carl. Looking at that paint job, he told himself
that he was going to learn how to paint like that!
He went back home and got a job doing production-line spray painting (caskets
and then kitchen cabinets), which will get you good, very quickly.
Carl painted there for about 3 years. After that,
he painted mostly as a hobby. Painting everything from a bus for a band to
his kids bicycles.
For
the last 34 years Carl studied the styles and techniques of all the
custom painting that has come along: the Kandies, scallops, lace painting,
flakes, smoke, graphics, and of course, the ever popular flames, but the one
that has been the most fun is the latest one out there, realistic flames!
It is very popular now and is a lot of fun to do.
Carl did a lot of motorcycle riding as a kid in high
school, but got away from it as the extra money was not there while raising
a family. Now with the kids raised and the new wave of interest in bikes across
the country, the bike bug bit again. So a few years back Carl's interest
in painting street rods had to scoot over and share the interest of
Custom Motorcycle Painting.
