On a solo basis, Ron has also interviewed such
top line acts as Grace Slick, who graciously extended her friendship to him with
two tickets to her Concert
that night at The Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.
Mendez produced Legendary Piano Player
Stan Szelest on “The
Willie May Blues Band Album” along with James Cotton, former Harp Player for
Muddy Water’s. He also Promoted and Produced James Cotton after the Studio
Session on the same night, Live in Concert at McGruders with The Willie May
Blues Band.
Ron has real hands-on experience as a professional
musician, working with many top-line acts through the years such as The Peer
Pressure Project. As their Front Man, Ron put the Band in the spotlight from
their very beginning, and is honored with holding the Title of opening for more National’s, in the shortest amount of
time, then any other act in the History
of The Buffalo Music Scene.
Music from Mendez has been Aired in 15 States including
Hawaii. "Southern Rock and Roll",
the Title Track, from Ron Mendez and The
Peer Pressure Project, features Dangerous Dan Toler of The Allman Brothers Band,
an accomplished musician who was nominated in 1988 as best Blues Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine.
In 1991, Mendez hooked up with 98 Rock
in Tampa Bay, Florida. 98 Rock is a National Rock Reporter
Station that reports their Air Play to Cash Box and Billboard
Magazine(s).
Through their combined efforts, Ron and the Program Director for
98 Rock coordinated his song, "Southern Rock and Roll",
to be Aired when Super Bowl XXV let out. Super Bowl XXV in
Tampa featured the Buffalo Bills, and many Buffalonians heard the
song during Super Bowl festivities.
Ron had 3 different line
ups with The Peer Pressure Project. The strongest was the first,
consisting of Ron Mendez, Jack Civiletto, Gary Buffamonti, Andy
Romanek and Rick Dranger. All 3 line Ups opened for National
Acts. All songs were written by Mendez, which he still performs
keeping his chops up around town. One of Ron’s Song’s from
25 years ago was just sold to Local Musician N.S.S., with
royalties, and put on one of his many Cd’s, ”Beat
-up Old Ugly Cynical & Live”.
The song “Care Free” is
on an Internet music loop, and can be heard all over the
world, 7 Day’s a Week, on Web Radio www.channelT.net.
Ron Mendez is a Musician for Musician’s. He’s
helped more then one band get work in Buffalo. For the past 15 years, he has
promoted and produced the biggest rock party in Buffalo, the Annual
Belle Starr Reunion. In the winter of 2000, two
days after a heavy blizzard, Mendez was able to fly
Dangerous Dan Toler (member of the Allman Brothers Band &
the Dickey Betts Band) in from Sarasota Florida. Even though all
other local shows were canceled that day, the Belle Starr
Reunion went on as Toler sat in with local Rock Act
Cheezy Money with N.S.S. In tribute to Mendez's strong feeling
that "the show must go on", 500 Loyal Fans came to
relive the glory days of the Belle Starr, at The Fun House.
Mendez has
sat in with many acts that played the famous night spot, playing
his Harp that he has Ultimately Mastered over the last 25
year’s plus. In 2000, Ron did the Song Southern Rock and Roll
that he wrote, with Dangerous Dan Toler this last reunion. Dan
took his Guitar off and gave the crowd a big thumbs up as he
took Pictures with Ron live on Stage. Ron has performed with the
Toler Brother’s for many concerts he promoted.
Through the years, Mendez has been involved with such worthy causes as: M.S. of W.N.Y. Hunter’s
Hope, The American Cancer Society and Make a Wish Foundation. In 1999 Ron was
asked to record on Lewis and Klark’s CD “A Buffalo Holiday With
Friends”. The CD, which was created to generate revenue for M.S., received
rave reviews. Ron’s song “Wonder of Life” featured recording
artist Rich Kallay and Bob Luterek, who also Produced and Engineered the CD.
Mendez’s songs have been aired on 97 Rock countless
times with many interviews. Many other stations have played his Album "Southern
Rock and Roll" which is soon to be release on C.D. The Album
is dedicated; "In Loving Memory of You and Your Music. Stan Szelest
{Jan.20th,1991}. Your music lives on forever." The song “Jumping in the Fire”
is dedicated to our men and women in the Persian Gulf War, and was played on
U.S. Radio during Desert Storm.
Always an active force in
the music scene, Mendez was selected as a Judge for The Guitar
Center Guitar Competition. The Guitar Center gave Ron, two beautiful
Guitars for two different Fund Raisers. The one that touched
his heart was an event for a 15 year old girl fighting a very
rare form of cancer. He also engineered a Fund Raiser for the
Restoration of The Hollywood Theater in Gowanda as part of The
Harley Happening, June 1,2,and 3,2001 in Gowanda, NY.
Mendez also writes columns
for publications. He’s done interviews with the likes of
Legendary London Rocker, Stevie Marriott from Humble Pie and a
full center page story on Lynyrd Skynyrd at Darien Lake. There
were only Four V.I.P. Passes with Tickets to the Concert
issued the night of performance. Ron, had them all and shared
them with his Wife and two Close Friends.
Ron also writes the
column, "Dining Out:
The Great Food’s of W.N.Y. and Canada"
for Night Life Magazine. He also writes the Annual Belle Starr
Story and promotes Band Profiles with the Magazine.
Many stories on Mendez, The
Peer Pressure Project, and the Belle Starr Reunion can be
found in the Buffalo
News Library on www.Buffalo.Com.
Some of these stories are 1000 word plus, and are pay-to-view.
Ron sat in with the late great
Roy Buchanan after rapping with him all day at the Renaissance
Theater in Rochester N.Y. . For his encore, Ron did
Vocal’s, Harp on one of his original songs, and gave the
lead to Roy! This was two weeks before Buchanan's untimely
death. He was found hanging in a cell after police
arrested him for disorderly conduct. Roy was up in spirit, and
was looking forward to the release of his new CD. His death
was ruled a suicide. To this day, Ron feels the whole incident is on a much grander scale
then any one knows.
Three of Mendez's songs were
aired on a live simulcast at The Scrap Yard on 103.3 The Edge,
hosted by D.J. and "First Lady of Rock" Jessie
Galanti. The band brought the house down!
Ron was honored by British
Music Legend Kim Simmons from Savoy Brown. His appearance was
requested by Simmons, who planned and cleared the jam
with Mendez. Ron also sat in with The Legendary Blues Band,
featuring Pine Top Perkins and Jerry Portney. The Legendary
Blues Band was the last of the Grammy Award Winning blues
bands.
Ron Mendez and Dolphin
Productions have booked many acts throughout the 27 years he
has been in the industry. Currently in the works are two CDs.
The first is the re-release of "Southern
Rock and Roll",
and the other is a live CD recording done at Long Meadows,
Sinclairville, at an out side festival. Ron, brought long time
friend and band mate Drummer from The Peer Pressure Project,
Rick Dranger, for the CD Project. Both CDs should be released
this year.
